Lindsay : I guess this means we're finally grown-ups.
Brian: Don't say that Wendy! We'll never grow up!
Lindsay: Don't be scared. Hell, if our parents could fuck up, so could we.

RP: MELANIE MARCUS: The beginnings... »

Mel couldnt get to sleep. She lay on her back in bed, eyes wide open. Linds was next to her, fast asleep. Mel sighed as she placed her hands into her face. Mel usually could fall asleep quite quickly, but tonight she just couldnt. Her body wanted sleep, but her mind just couldnt turn off.
Mel…

Lindsay sat up rubbing sleep from her eyes. “Mel, sweetheart what’s wrong?” Lindsay reached out and lightly brushed her hand against Mel’s arm. She wasn’t sure what was the matter, but whenever Mel felt sad she tended to blame herself. She hoped this wasn’t about Brian refusing to sign over Gus so Mel could legally adopt him, but she felt mostly clueless as to what else it could be. Lindsay played with the cream lace trim of her little green nighty before looking up at Mel again with wide eyes and linking their fingers together. “Tell me love.” she urged softly.

Justin’s forehead rested into Brian’s chest, his eyes squinting shut. The way Brian called Justin’s name, that tone, with such a frantic sound to it. It sounded so familar. He had heard that tone before, but when? His arms slowly released themselves from their protective stance in front of his face, and he wrapped his arms around Brian’s waist. Strange, jumbled images, memories, sensations started to flood through Justin’s brain. There was a bat, a bat swinging like Gus’. Brian screaming his name, then…..blackness. Justin flinched again.

“Shhh.” Brian kissed the top of Justin’s head protectively, he would not let go until Justin did, his eyes were closed, trying to shut out the memory, begging to forget the look on Justin’s face the instant the bat collided with his skull. His eyes had been so bright with happiness and they hadn’t had timed to register what was happening, the bat hit him with a smile still on his face, eyes still beaming. He’d tried, he’d seen Hobbes and had really tried, maybe if he had called out a moment before it would have changed things, but then again it could have been worse. Still none it would have happened if Brian hadn’t gone to his prom, maybe he was better off leaving. Honestly Brian didn’t care, he couldn’t let Justin go.

Justin was starting to see it more clearly. He was walking away, leaving Brian at his jeep, a smile still plastered on his face. It had been the best night of his life. Had?….Yes, Brian said they had danced, that Brian had kissed him, in front of everyone. He could almost faintly remember the sensation, the stares and gaps from his classmates. He could almost remember the parking lot. The last thing he had seen before things went black was Brian. Brian rushing to his side. He had tried to save him. No matter what, no matter what happened, that was all that mattered. Brian had tried to save him. Justin slowly tilted his head up, just enough to look into Brians eyes, keeping his arms tight around his waist.

Brian bit his lip, staring down into Justin’s eyes made everything a bit, quieter. Brian pressed his forehead to Justin’s and breathed slowly. For a moment he could have sworn Justin’s lips were curled in a smile. Brian held him there for a minute before bending down to kiss Justin on the lips lightly, his bottom lip felt swollen, puffed from the teeth he had sunk into the skin to stop the desire to scream. He deepened the kiss, pulling Justin’s arms up so that they circled his neck. Brian picked Justin off the floor, just by a few inches, deepening the kiss even more.

Lindsay watched the scene in confusion until Gus’ bat tapped her leg. She took the toy from him gently, picked Gus up and left the room. Brian was holding Justin in his arms and Justin was unable to do so much as hug him back. Lindsay sat in the kitchen, having placed Gus in his play pen, and smoothed her hands through her hair. She hadn’t meant for anything like this to happen, Justin had been a go go dancer for gods sake, he wasn’t supposed to be flinching anymore, but the bat, the small yellow toy had been a sudden reminder. Lindsay tilted her head back and exhaled slowly, trying to regain herself. She peered carefully into the living room, Brian was kissing Justin, holding him off the ground in his arms. The sight did things to Lindsay she did not want to admit. Everyone wanted Brian Kinney, she reminded herself. Justin was the one Brian needed, she hoped he knew it.

Justin had been trying to not be too obvious, but was staring at Brian holding Gus. Seeing him with his son always made him smile. The look, the glow of Brian with his son was like nothing else. He suddenly wanted nothing more then to have his sketch pad with him and to draw the perfect scene in front of him. His focus turned as he heard Lindsey and she pulled him into a hug. “Hey! Thanks.” He said, sighing gently. It had been another long night tossing and turning, trying to decide what he should do about college. He laughed, “I honestly have no idea how I got a good enough score on the SAT with that one over there being a distraction.” He teased, even though it had been Justin who had wanted to go to Babylon instead of study. He took a seat next to Lindsey. “I’m really considering PIA,” he said, his eyes bouncing to where Brian was, as if to explain his reasoning behind that statement.

“You said dancing make you study better.” Brian said, not looking away from Gus. “PIA probably didn’t pick you for your scores, they probably enjoyed your naked drawings of my dick.” Brian grinned at Gus. “Yes they did! They sure like Daddy’s cock.” Brian cooed.

“Brian!” Lindsay shouted. “Language, Gus is impressionable.” Lindsay turned her attention back to Justin. “You’ve really got a talent, and Brian tells me that with the new electronic drawing pad you’re having an easier time.” Lindsay noticed that both she and Justin basked in the light that was Brian Kinney and baby. She wondered for a moment what it would have been like had they been a a straight couple, if there was ever really a man for her, it would have been Brian, but even if he had been straight she needed dependency, loyalty, undivided attention and constant affirmation of love, she accepted this about herself. She looked at Justin, who was clearly in love with Brian, and wondered if Brian felt the same, or if he would ever say it. Justin could go to Dartmouth, but Lindsay honestly thought PIA would be better. “You have to picture yourself in both places, Lindsay said sweetly, which one feels like a dream come true? For me that was always art school.”

Justin’s checks turned as red as Gus’ little beanie. “I do not draw your cock that much!” Justin replied defensively, crossing his arms over his chest. He smirked, as both he and Brian needed to watch their language. “Bri doesn’t do rated G, I guess. I mean look, he totally corrupted me,” he tilted his head back so he could look at Brian and give him a wink. Gus babbled, seemingly unaware of the strange dynamics that were a constant with his “family”. Two mothers, a daddy and his….whatever Justin was to Brian, several, several gay male friends,as well as a smargoshboard of lesbian friends, and of course, Debbie, who had taken over a grandmother role of sorts. Sure, it would prove for a lot of questioning looks when he got older, but right now, it sure was making Gus an interesting character. Justin turned towards Lindsey as she talked to him of college, as she spoke to him of dreams. “I love Dartmouth,” he said honestly, talking quiter now, hoping Brian wouldn’t hear. “It’s always been my dream school and everything about it is perfect. But, it doesnt have as great a program as PIA for what I want to go into.” He said. “And it’s far away,” he whispered, his eyes bouncing over to Brian.

“I’m sure there are plenty of gay bars up in college town U.S.A.” Brian said with a smirk. “You could go back to go go dancing, you’d be famously popular among your little peers.” Brian laughed and walked toward them. He sat on a chair facing them, suddenly very curious in their conversation, but trying to make it appear as though he didn’t care much at all, it was a delicate balance between being a cocky dick and showing Justin he was worth staying for, not that Brian was actually sure he was worth staying for.

“Shut up Brian!” Lindsay said, reaching out and smacking his knee lightly. “Justin if Dartmouth is your dream you should go.” Lindsay saw the hurt look Brian tried to mask with apathy and continued. “But I think you could really have a wonderful and rewarding career if you chose art.” She leaned forward and plucked Gus out of Brian’s arms. Brian looked at her like, wtf? but Lindsay wanted Brian and Justin to talk. “Come on Gus lets get some toys!” She said walking across the room to a pile of Gus’s things.

Justin looked up from his sketchpad as he heard the phone ring. Hesitating for a moment, he realized Brian was most likely asleep and wouldn’t be taking the call. He uncrossed his legs from the couch he had been drawing on and made his way to the house phone. “Hello?” He said into the receiver, it…

Brian rolled over in bed, still naked and tangled in the sheets. “Why the fuck can’t lesbians sleep in like normal homosexuals.” Brian pressed his face into the pillows for a moment before sitting up. “Am I in trouble with Mel again or is this a social call?” Brian climbed out of bed, pulled on a pair of jeans and walked to Justin, pinning him against the door frame. “And we could have just stayed in and fucked.” Brian pulled away from Justin just as he was about to kiss him and dressed in a blue shirt before flipping his sunglasses up onto his head. “Ready Sunshine?” Brian asked rifling through his pockets for his keys.

Justin rolled his eyes, yanking the covers off Brian as he rolled over. “It’s past noon, Bri. Why can’t you get up like normal homosexuals?” He replied with a laugh. Justin was about to answer Brian’s question when he felt himself be backed up against the wall, Brian in front of him. Brian moved close, as if he was about to kiss him. Justin’s breath caught in his throat as Brian leaned forward, but Brian pulled away before he kissed him, turning away to find his keys. Justin sighed, and leaned his head back against the wall. Fuck you, kinney, he thought, as he tried to regain normal breathing. “Yeah, let’s go.” He said finally.

Brian saw Justin grit his teeth when he backed out of the kiss, it was cute that he could still do that to him. Once in the Jeep Brian leaned over to Justin, kissing him roughly, pushing him back against the seat, his hands splayed on his chest.

Pulling onto Lindsay’s street and parking in front of the house Brian got excited, he loved Gus, seeing the his tiny hands and feet and big eyes made it worth putting up with Mel or anybody else. He also cared deeply about Lindsay, but that was a confusing enough relationship before she decided to have his kid.

“Lindsay!” Brian walked into the house, Justin smiling just behind him, and kissed Lindsay. “Where is my boy?” Brian walked to Gus’s play pen and picked him up.

Lindsay leaned back and laughed when Brian kissed her, it was his normal way of greeting. She stepped back to let him go grab Gus and turned to Justin. “I heard you got into an Ivy League, who would have thought Brian gave you enough free time to get anything done?” She smiled and hugged him. “Mel and I are so proud of you.” She paused, turned back to see Brian bouncing Gus and laughing, then back to Justin. “I also heard you got accepted to Pittsburgh Institute of Fine Art,” Lindsay said sitting on the couch and motioning for Justin to join her. “That is a fantastic arts school.”
